Lessons from “A New Earth” by Eckhart Tolle
Do you feel your mind is always busy with thoughts, and your thoughts are in a loop? A New Earth by Eckhart Tolle makes you realize that these thoughts are your programmed way of living and teaches you to transcend the continuous thinking process to uncover the inner levels of your personality. In this article, I will provide the most significant key points of the book in a clear and beneficial way so that you can use them in your everyday life.
Lesson 1: Knowing Your Self – The Voice in Your Head
The ego is the voice in your head that makes mental comparisons, evaluations, and judgments. It is not what you are, but what you make yourself out to be based on your beliefs. This suffering caused by the ego will always exist in one way or another since the ego will always desire something, yet will never be satisfied.
I can still recall when my friend Jake purchased a new car. Jake was so thrilled about it for approximately two weeks. Then, the excitement started to disappear when he saw his neighbor’s new car. This is when disappointment came in. This is the way the ego operates! The ego may experience a few seconds of satisfaction, but when it always desires more, it results in eternal discontent.
Tolle teaches that the first step to freedom is to realize that the ego is at work when one feels not good enough or needs more to be happy.
Lesson 2: The Pain Body – Releasing the Past Pains
We human beings experience emotional stress in life, and it is deep down in us. Tolle refers to this as the pain body. We have a backpack of our wounds, and they are activated at some point.
Severe negative feelings may be disengaging and unreasonable in some cases, and they may trigger the pain body. One should not be caught up in such reactions but observe them.
Lesson 3: Power of the Present Moment – Life Only Occurs in This Moment
As other philosophers of the modern era, Tolle became popular through the lesson of the present. We spend all our time thinking either about the past or the future, not living in the present, which is the only thing that belongs to us.
For instance, there were occasions when I would plan a hike, find the best places with the view, and fantasize about how cool they would be. On our way hiking, I would get too involved in climbing the top or taking pictures that I would ignore the surrounding landscape. One day, I left my phone behind, and I had no choice but to start enjoying myself on the hike. This time, I experienced the most calming hike ever.
According to Tolle, there are easy ways for you to return to the present moment such as breathing exercises or focusing on sensations in your hands or fingertips. When your thoughts tend to stray to the past or future, it helps.
Lesson 4: Spatial Awareness – The Intervals of Thought
We have breaks from observations, or silence between thoughts. Tolle tells us that we should be more attentive to these pauses and attempt to make them longer.
Suppose we watch a film. Our focus is concentrated on the screen, and we do not pay attention to the surrounding space. However, when we turn our focus on the surrounding space, it involves everything in the room. In the same way, by paying attention to the gaps between thoughts, you will realize the infinite, silent terrain of the mind.
I know this guy who meditates and is deep into spirituality. His spatial awareness consisted of establishing a bell that would ring at random times during the day. When he heard the bell, he would inspect the space around him and his inner space. He explained this practice by stating that his feeling of peace grows naturally with time, no matter what happens.
Lesson 5: Acceptance What Is – Being in Harmony with the Present Moment
According to Tolle, inner peace can be achieved by accepting the current moment. Do not want it to be otherwise. The very moment you need something else besides the present moment, realize that there is a problem with your thought patterns. First of all, you need to start with acceptance.
Sarah was going for a job interview when she got stuck in a terrible traffic jam. What she did was to accept the situation rather than fight against reality with her nervousness and anger (that could not help her solve the problem). The reality in this case was to call the company to inform them that she will be late. She did deep breathing and revised her notes during the anticipated waiting time. This strategy enabled her to come in calm and collected rather than stressed and agitated.
Although going against the flow is most likely to result in pain, acceptance provides a platform for clarity.
Lesson 6: Waking up to Your Role
Tolle thinks that it does not matter what you do as a profession. Instead, the most significant meaning in your life is your attitude towards everyday. They should not be concerned with goals or daily activities. Instead, they should enjoy the state of being in the present.
There are local schools where a custodian is very interested and attentive to their work and positively impacts the mood of students and teachers around them. He does not just clean up, as he likes to say. His work is to design an environment where children can learn without any disturbance. His manner of doing his job is significant not in the work but in the observation of his work.
The trick of life is to develop presence and awareness of what you are doing now. This will make each act you make meaningful.
Lesson 7: The Inner Body – The Doorway to Being
As Tolle explains, feeling the energy in your body is one way to be present in the moment. This is what he terms inner body awareness, and it relaxes the mind and establishes a deeper connection.
Do this: Try to feel the energy and tingling in your hands. Close your eyes and sense the area in your hands. Energy is present, but most people do not feel it when they don’t really pay close attention.
I know a surgeon who does this before operating. She also regularly takes a moment to notice the energy in her hands and arms. This habit assists her in being in the moment. She reports having a clearer mind and a sense of peace, and because of this, her hands are far steadier and instinctual in the operating room.
Lesson 8: The Self Beyond the Self – The Greater Identity
We are all made to understand that we are not what we think, do, or own. Tolle claims that the real us is the consciousness that observes all we go through.
While being in his 70s, my grandfather lost all of his belongings due to a fire accident. At the same time, he considered himself liberated, though it sounded strange to me. Referring to his experience later, he said, “I felt as if all that belonged to me were all gone and I was still here. And I realized that it is not me or what I have, it is the consciousness noticing everything.”
The moment you notice your thoughts from the outside or hear them as a voice inside yourself, your whole perception of life changes.
Lesson 9: Relationships – Getting out of the Ego Dynamic
Conflict has been the key component of almost every relationship up to the present. We can develop healthier relationships through the development of awareness and awareness of interactions.
I have had neighbors who had been married for more than 40 years and were still fighting the same problems. Once they were taught about their ‘ego’ behavior, they came up with a system in which they could communicate to each other by touching their ears that my ego was misbehaving. This easy awareness trick made them alter their arguments and laugh at themselves rather than remain trapped in the same patterns.
By understanding that conflict is caused by the desire to control, be approved, or be right, we can make a more conscious decision about how to react.
Lesson 10: Creating a New Planet – The Personal Change and the World
Tolle is convinced that human consciousness and awareness will have to change globally, which will bring personal peace. This will transform everything, and as human beings develop as individuals, humanity will develop as a whole towards being more conscious.
The more conscious we become, the more peace and harmony we will have.
The Core of the Message
The essence of the New Earth is the notion of releasing ourselves and our habitual ways of thinking and living in the world of deeper levels of consciousness within us. This does not mean that we have to believe new things. Instead, it calls us to live in a higher state of consciousness.
The good part about Tolle’s teachings is that you do not need to transform your life situation radically. You may begin with what you are. All you need to do is be more here, more conscious of what you are thinking instead of being caught up in it, and more in touch with the life that lies beneath your thinking mind.
The more we follow his teachings, the more we transform our personal life experience. We also help to build a more conscious, peaceful world, a new Earth indeed.
