Simply Ponderous
by Elizabeth Erenberger
Our world is a mysterious place. As children, even the smallest things appear miraculous through the lens of youthful innocence. It is in childhood that we often most authentically relate to the idea of fairies and gnomes, angels and dragons, and other “mythical” or rather, intangible beings. But as life progresses and skepticism begins to creep in, there are still experiences in life that cannot be defined by traditional logic.
The legends and stories within our societies of monsters, ghosts, and/or spiritual interventions, often hold deeply reflective meaning in regards to our social construct and belief systems. What is it that makes us fearful? What is it that makes us feel safe? Oftentimes that which is feared in any culture is what is misunderstood or unknown. Our uncertainty can prevent us from seeing the authentic nature of that which we feel we cannot relate to.
Those who have experienced psychic phenomenon and other spiritual mysteries are often the most avid arguers of their powers. Even the most skeptical of adults often have at least one mysterious experience from their lifetime they cannot fully explain through scientific evaluation. Are these mysterious moments just a random circumstance, or something deeper and more meaningful that we might have failed to interpret?
Some people would claim that loved ones passed are angels who watch over us, still others would claim they are ghosts who haunt us. There are some who claim there is no afterlife at all. Isn’t it mysterious in and of itself that we are still so divided and unclear on this very human and intrinsic process?
The ponderous nature of our lives is what inspires and engages scientists, scholars, poets and philosophers alike. It is a whisper of lost knowing calling us back to our childhood wonder. Reclaiming our curiosity can be a sort of rebirthing. It is time to rediscover the very magic in life’s little mysteries. It’s time to turn the senses up and turn the “perceptions” down. By allowing ourselves to believe in what cannot be seen, by taking time to slow down and notice life’s blessings, we access new parts of the psyche and imagination. With these simple exercises we can begin to manifest a more fulfilling and romantic connection to life and our unique human experiences. Our stories, hopes and our dreams are only limited by our own capacity to imagine them. Open to the mysteries, embrace the unknown.
